Handmade Plantable Paper

It’s here, it’s here! Our favorite day of the year! Happy Earth Day, everyone!

Today’s the day we celebrate Momma Nature and all her glory. In 1970, the first Earth Day protests took place at colleges and communities across America.  Nearly 20 million people across all political parties and demographics peacefully demonstrated in favor of environmental reform.

Almost 50 years later, we’re still celebrating Momma Nature and all her glory. Every day she wakes up, painting a beautiful sunset over Bali or dropping fresh snow on a mountain in Nepal.  Her work is amazing and the reason we have #nofilterneeded on Instagram.

We decided to take a bit of the earth, recycle it into something new, and give it right back to Momma Nature. With the help of our stylist Hailey, we took shredded old paper, blended it into new paper, and added seeds so it can be planted.

Here’s our how-to on plantable paper, the recyclable gift that grows!

What you need:

  • Recycled paper (Use high quality paper for sturdier results)
  • Seeds, like wildflowers
  • Blender
  • Bowl for water
  • Plastic storage container
  • Wooden spoon
  • Butterfly cookie cutter or another shape (optional)
  • Skewer or chopstick (optional)
  • Mould and deckle (We got ours from Wooden Deckle)
  • Cotton paper (optional)
  • Scissors or paper shredder
  • Storage container
  • Sponge

Plantable Seed Paper DIY

1. Shred your recycled paper with scissors, a paper shredder or by hand, and soak it overnight in a bowl of water.
2. If you have a piece of cotton paper, add this to make the pulp stronger.
3. Add the pulp back into the bowl and gently mix in seeds with a spoon so they don’t break.

FOR RECTANGLE PAPER

4. Pour the pulp into a plastic storage container and add enough water so the mould and deckle is completely submerged when placed underwater.

5. Place the screen underwater and move it side to side so the pulp fully covers the screen. Carefully lift it out and tilt it back and forth to let the extra water drain.

6. Flip the pulp onto a clean surface and use a sponge to absorb any excess water through the top of the screen.

7. Wait for it to dry overnight.

Once the paper is dry, write a note on it and pass it out to friends so they can plant their paper and watch the wildflower seeds grow! You can make paper like this for cards, business cards, or even a hangtag on a present.
