Happy Pride Month, Nomads!
This year’s theme is all about owning your own pride.
What does that mean to us at Earthbound?
We’ve been a leader of inclusivity and a supporter of individualism since we first opened in 1996. We attract people of all backgrounds, cultures and beliefs under one ideal: we are all a part of one world and one race, the human race.
It’s never mattered to us what you look like, where you’re from or who you love – as long as you open your heart to all.
This month we’re highlighting 4 LGBTQ relationships related to our Earthbound family.
Follow their journeys as they discuss love, hope and the challenges of 2017.
MEET JUSTIN & JOEY:
Justin (right) is our Home Décor buyer and is responsible for bringing back some of our most unique pieces. He travels all around the world from India to Brazil to Bali to find treasures like Hand-Printed Tapestries and Hand Blown Rootwood Vases.
EB: What do you love most about your spouse/partner?
Justin: What I love most about Joey is his heart. He goes above and beyond for his family members, friends and the patients he sees at his job. He’s so caring they should name a Care Bear after him! Haha
Joey: I love Justin’s tender spirit and his stature. Haha. He’s 6’5″ and I’m 6’1″, so it’s kind of nice having someone be able to reach the top of my shoebox stack and not have to go grab the stepladder.
EB: How do you stand up for what you believe in?
Justin: To put it simply, I think it’s just about being yourself and living your life for you. Every day we go out just being ourselves. Nothing more, nothing less. One of the biggest reasons I fell in love with Joey is that he was true to himself all day, every day. I immediately respected and admired that. It helped me be more ‘me’.
Joey: Everyone’s entitled to their own belief system and I don’t take anyone’s beliefs personal…they are their beliefs, not mine. You should absolutely voice concerns or speak out if you are feeling wronged, but don’t live your life based around other’s opinions and beliefs. I love my life for me because that’s exactly what it is…a life, not a lifestyle. You’re only given one chance at it
EB: What makes your love story unique? or special?
Joey: We met on a dating app and our first date was at the Texas State Fair.
Justin: He wooed me with fried Oreos and corny dogs. Haha I’m still around almost 7 years later!
Joey: I proposed on our first trip to Disneyland together in front of the castle: Mickey ear hats and all.
Justin: Spoiler alert…I said yes #mouseketeersforever
EB: What advice do you have for people who are struggling to be comfortable with who they are?
Joey: In the wise words of Judy Hopps, “We all have limitations and we all make mistakes. The more we try to understand one another, the more exceptional each of us will be. But we have to try. Try to make the world a better place. Look inside yourself and recognize that change starts with you…it starts with me…it starts with all of us.”
Justin: And I will say in the wise words of Ru Paul, “If you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love somebody else. Can I get an amen up in here?”
