Happy National Dog Day from our Two-Legged & Four-Legged Friends

Every Friday at Earthbound Trading Co.’s home office in Grapevine, Texas, we get to start the party early and bring our furry kids to work with us! After the weekly grind, we’re in desperate need of wet puppy kisses and tons of cuddles to ease us into the weekend. At Earthbound, our pets aren’t just animals with cute faces. They’re a part of the family. That’s why we’re constantly working to bring attention to dogs in need. We know a lot of dogs out there aren’t as lucky as our own.

Healthy Pumpkin Dog Treats (with DogsButter too!)

‘Tis the season for holiday parties and friendsgiving gatherings with the people – and pups – we love the most. We become googling machines, hunting for the best hostess gift for the next event. If you’re like us, then most of your friends probably have a dog, or two…or three they think the world of. We even tend to treat our dogs better than ourselves and want what’s best for them. Fur children are real chidren, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

So what do you bring along with that bottle of wine and agate coasters when you’re in a rush? Whip up this healthy and easy batch of dog treats for the hostess’ one true love and maybe you’ll get an extra serving or to go box of that mac n cheese you were eyeing all night.

Here’s what you need:

  • 1/2 cup DOGSBUTTER (Unlike real PB, this doesn’t have any added salt, sugar or hydrogenated oils)
  • 1 cup 100% Pure Pumpkin Puree, canned
  • 1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour (might need less, depending on consistency)

Supplies:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a large bowl, mix the DOGSBUTTER and pumpkin puree together. Add 1/4 cup of flour at a time and stir together until the dough isn’t sticky. You don’t want the mixture to become too dough-y.

3. Grab your rolling pin and roll out the dough between two sheets of parchment paper until it is about 1/4″ thick. Start cutting out the treats with the dog cookie cutters.

4. Add parchment paper to the cookie sheet and place the dog treats on it.

5. Bake at 350 degrees for about 8 – 10 minutes. Remove them once they are completely cooled and store it in an airtight container. Since these are all natural, the shelf life is only 3 – 5 days.

If you try these out, let us know how your dog or friend’s dog likes them! Pumpkin puree is rich in soluble fiber and is great for keeping their digestive tract running smoothly. Plus the DOGSBUTTER provides added nutritional benefits like Vitamin E, protein, and Omega-3’s, which is great for their skin.

National Dog Day

We looooove dogs. Can’t get enough of their slobbery kisses and puppy dog eyes. We love them so much we even have Dog Fridays at our home office! When Riley (left) joined our team, he instantly became enamored with Ms. Olive (right). You might remember Riley professing his love for Olive on our blog. We’re so happy Riley took the plunge and let Olive know how he really feels. He is truly ‘head over paws’ for her!

At Earthbound we’re also huge advocates of adoption. Olive and Riley were adopted and many of our other dogs at the office didn’t come from a breeder. There are SO many beautiful dogs out there just waiting for their fur-ever family to take them home and spoil them. You’re not only saving money, you’re saving A LIFE! Plus you can find an interesting mixed breed that is just as unique as you! We’re not about being “cookie cutter” with our style so why should we expect our dogs to be?

Meet Lucy, Our EB Foster Pup

So now it is time to meet Lucy, our honorary EB foster pup. She is approximately one year old and was saved from the Dallas Animal Shelter when her time was up. Luckily for Lucy, we have some pretty amazing employees who decided to rescue and foster her until she finds a home. Lucy is an absolute sweetheart, like really. She may look big (and majestic) in some of her photos, but she is soooo cuddly and GREAT with kids. She loves being close to her human friends and likes other dogs too (no cats, please). To top it off, Lucy is potty trained, crate trained, an expert leash-walker AND can sit for a treat.

If you’re interested in adopting Lucy and live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, click HERE. We’d love for a friend of EB to take her home!

Dog Blog: Pet Profile Loki Marroquin

At Earthbound, our pets are just as much a part of our lives as anyone else. Many of us lovingly refer to them as our “fur babies” and we couldn’t imagine life without them. Check out the interview with our HR Assistant Michelle Harrenga’s dog, Mr. Loki Marroquin.

Nickname: Well…sometimes mom and dad call me Yoki or Baby Boy, but mostly just Loki. Oh… they do say No a lot, so that might count too.

Breed: I am a big, bad, scary Pitbull!

Favorite Foods/Toys: I love to chew on the chairs in the dining room and steal my sister Bella’s food. My favorite toys are Bunny and Rope, but I’ll play with any of the toys my human brothers and sister leave on the floor for me.

Dislikes: When my water bowl runs out of water! Bella and I drink a lot of water and sometimes Mom and Dad are busy. It’s ok though; I just carry my water bowl into the living room and show them that it’s empty. Mom says sorry and refills it fast!

Known for: Trying to conquer the world! (Evil laugh)

How did you meet your mom, Michelle?

  • Well… my first parents took me to Dads work and showed my brothers and I to him and one of my human brothers. I liked them right away so I made a point to be on my best behavior. Then 2 weeks later I got to go home with them and meet Mom, Bella, and the rest of the little humans! It was a great day!

We hear you have a BIG family! What are some of your favorite things to do with them?

  • Yes! I have 4 human brothers and 1 human sister! We play all the time! I jump on them and lick them all over! Mom says it can be too much love, but I just can’t help myself! We play basketball and soccer and I’m really good at getting the ball when we play catch.

What’s it like having Bella for a big sister?

  • It’s amazing! She’s so good to me. I have to bite her really hard before she bites me back. I love being around her and I follow her everywhere! We do everything together. She doesn’t like to cuddle as much as I do, but if she’s really tired and if I really try to be calm, she’ll let me sleep next to her.

What’s an average day like for Loki?

  • I get up early! I love the morning. I like to sit on the back patio and smell the air for a long time before I want to come in, even if Mom is calling me. I get to play with all my human brothers and sister all day long since school is out! They are so crazy though, that I need to take lots of naps.

What’s the hardest part about being a puppy?

  • People think that I’m older than I am because I’m so big and strong! They don’t realize that I’m still just a baby and only 4 ½ months old.

Since your name is Loki, you must be a huge Avengers fan. Is he your favorite?

  • Yes! I got 2 words for you…World Domination!

You’re still young but you’re growing up fast! What do you want to be when you grow up?

  • When I grow up I want to be coolest, strongest, fastest, bestest looking dog in the world!

If you could meet any dog in the world, who would that be and why?

  • I would love to meet Hulk! He is the biggest pitbull in the world!

You recently debuted as an Earthbone model for our online store. What was that like?

  • It was pawesome! There were so many great dogs to play with and even a cat! I got to play with some great toys and Mom gave me a ton of treats! I can’t lie…all of the attention was intoxicating! I love when Mom and Dad show me my pics on the Earthbound website!

What do you want the world to know? Any words of inspiration? Advice? It is a dog eat dog world out there…

  • Don’t judge a dog by its breed!

Dog Blog: Pet Profile on Riley Locke

At Earthbound, our pets are just as much a part of our lives as anyone else. Many of us lovingly refer to them as our “fur babies” and we couldn’t imagine life without them. Check out the interview with our graphic designer Katie Locke’s dog, Mr. Riley Locke.

Nickname: Ry or Mom’s Foxy Man

Breed: Dachsund & Jack Russel Terror…I mean, Terrier…

Favorite Food/Toys: Chicken, paws down! I like any toys with a squeaker in it. I like them SO much, mom has to take them away at night just to get some sleep.

Dislikes: Leashes, small garden gnomes and the vacuum

How did you meet your mom, Katie?

  • My previous owners didn’t really know how to handle my high-spirited nature but they knew Katie and I would be a match made in heaven. So at 5 months, I started training her to be the best human ever.

What are some of your favorite things to do with your mom?

  • Two words – DOG. PARK. Katie takes me at least 3 times a week to get out that ‘pent up energy’ she keeps talking about. Whatever that means.

Does your mom do any weird “human things”? Don’t worry, we won’t tell.

  • She’s always singing and let’s just say…she’s no Mariah Carey. Oh! AND she is always tapping and looking at that toy with the bright screen. Sometimes she even talks to it! Can you say “CRAZY”? It doesn’t even squeak! Trust me, I’ve tried.

What’s your “guilty pleasure”?

  • Chewing on shoes. There’s just something about shoes that tastes soooo good.

What’s your stance on cats? Love ’em or hate ’em?

  • I would love if one came close enough so I could find out!

If you could meet any dog in the world, who would it be and why?

  • Beethoven, the way he protects his humans is inspirational. Plus, I think we’re close to the same size. I also like that Snoopy guy, he’s one cool pup.

What’s your favorite part about Dog Friday at Earthbound? Have you made any new friends?

  • THE WHOLE DAY!!! Everyone who walks by can’t help but play with me. (Mainly because I make sure they know I am there). As for new friends, I’m meeting tons! My favorite – although I have only seen her once – is Olive. I think I’m in love. She won’t play with me…but I think she likes me back.

What do you want the world to know? Any words of inspiration? Advice? It is a dog eat dog world out there, after all.

  • Well, I personally think those humans should relax more often. You know, feel the wind in your face as you hang out of the car window. Life’s easier than you think it is. And if you find yourself feeling blue, just find something that squeaks. It always makes me feel 100% better!

The Scoop on Stuff Sacks

Have you ever noticed that your dog just LOVES your dirty laundry? Maybe sometimes he steals a dirty sock or underwear. Or maybe he plops down and snuggles up in that dirty pile in the corner of the room. Either way, most dog owners have seen their pooch on the prowl for their next prized position.

But the question is: WHY? Why do our furry friends love our sweaty socks when even the thought of them make us turn up our nose?

As many of us know, dogs have a heightened sense of smell. Depending on the breed, their nostrils can be tens of thousands more powerful than ours. So wouldn’t that mean your sweaty socks smell THAT much more gross? Not necessarily.

Our dirty laundry is covered with our scent, the good and the bad. From a young age, dogs learn to associate certain smells with positive vibes, like their mother. That’s why when puppies are weaned from their mother, they are often given a piece of the blanket they laid on with her. This allows them to feel comforted by their mother’s smell without her being there.

Experts often suggest new dog owners put an old t-shirt, sock, blanket, sweater, etc. in their crate when they leave the house. The familiar smell of the family unit will help the dog deal with separation anxiety when no one is there.

Our new line of pet products, Earthbone by eb, understands this important bonding tool and that’s why we have Stuff Sacks! A Stuff Sack is simply a mesh duvet cover that you can fill with all of your family’s old clothing items. It not only acts as a comforting agent, but also as a repurposed mattress you can fit inside of a Dog Bed Duvet. If the Stuff Sack needs some freshening up, you can take it out of the duvet and throw it in the wash just like you would with your regular clothes.

We love this product because of its creativity AND eco-friendly nature. Check out our Stuff Sacks that come in Small, Medium-Large and Huge. Plus, we have a variety of Dog Bed Duvet covers in different sizes and colors to pair with a Stuff Sack.

Bone Blog: Dog for Dog

Since we launched our partnership with Dog for Dog in June 2014, our sales staff have been working hard to get the word out on this wonderful organization. Here’s how it works: For every Dog for Dog treat sold, a treat of equal value is given to a dog in need. Dog for Dog has kept tabs on all of the goodies we have sold and shipped the donation quantity to us. We decided to give our very first donation to the Legacy Humane Society(LHS) in Rockwall, TX on October 16.

Humane Legacy Society

Thanks to our dedicated, dog-loving staff, we were able to donate 10,298 DOGSBARS and 2,124 DOGSTREATS to pooches in need! That’s over $62,000 in yummy, all natural treats ! This is a HUGE accomplishment for our first donation and we couldn’t have done it without our generous customers!!

Bone Blog: Pet Profile

Cornbread is one of many of Jennifer Langdon’s fur babies. We sat down for a quick chat to learn about the day in the life of Cornbread.

Cornbread

EB: So Cornbread, how did you get your name?

Cornbread: Well you know, everybody loves Cornbread so why not!

EB: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Cornbread: When I was younger, my mom (by the way she is the greatest mom in the world) would take me out on Friday nights for a car cruise. We would walk around looking at old cars and hangout with a pretty big group of her friends. I’d find a chair (yep, I sit on chairs- none of sitting on that hard ground stuff for me) and a couple of her friends would always pick me up a hamburger or two from Whataburger. Man those are great burgers! Now that I have gotten older I like to sleep. When I am not sleeping I like to nap – oh and cuddling with mom is the best feeling in the world! I still occasionally chase a squirrel or two, and I like to bring mom the occasional bird to show her how much I love her.

EB: So would you say hamburgers are your favorite food?

Cornbread: They rank up there, but I think watermelon is my absolute favorite. When mom cuts up a watermelon I stand by her hoping she will give me a few juicy bites. But you know, almost any human food is great, although she doesn’t let me have very much of it. Man if I had thumbs, I would be in the refrigerator helping myself to everything and anything. But she takes good care of me and cooks hamburger meat for all of my meals.

EB: That sounds like one special mom you have.

Cornbread: She is awesome! She took in all of my siblings and I. While I didn’t care for sharing the attention, it was great that she gave all of us homes. You see, we came from some not so good places but she has given us a wonderful safe and loving home. She also makes sure we have good food to eat. (Sigh)… she does travel a lot for work, but she has always had someone stay with us and take care of us. I wish she didn’t have to travel but she calls it “making the dog food money”

EB: So how many siblings do you have?

Cornbread: I have 4 siblings. 3 brothers and one sister. Over the years she has rescued more dogs than I can remember but she kept us lucky five.

EB: What are some things you like to do for relaxation?

Cornbread: I am a pretty mellow dog so I like to sleep. Sometimes mom gives me a doggie massage especially when a thunderstorm is approaching

Cornbread Cornbread

EB: So you don’t like thunderstorms?

Cornbread: No, I really dislike them. I used to be really afraid but mom has assured me that I am fine as long as I stay inside. When she is home she will lay with me, pet me and assure me that we will be ok. When they get really bad she has a special shirt she puts on me that makes me feel much better.

EB: What kind of shirt?

Cornbread: She calls it a Thundershirt. All I know is that it works.

EB: If you could spread a message to the world what would it be?

Cornbread: I would let everyone know that animals do have emotions and feel love, we also feel pain and hate people that are mean to us. I would encourage everyone to rescue a stray or two!

Bone Blog: Sad to the Bone

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 2.51.16 PM

It’s that time of year again when we trade in long and sunny days by the water for schedules and uncomfortable desks. As hard as it is to get back into the swing of things, it’s even more “ruff” for our beloved furry friends. Man (or woman’s) best friend spends all summer lounging around or going on adventures with their favorite human. Once the dog days are over, the house gets quiet and the world of a pooch is turned upside down.

Did you know nearly 20% of dogs have separation anxiety? Drastic changes in our schedules can really mess with their emotions and cause them to act out. Excessive barking, whining, scratching at doors, soiling the floor, and chewing (no Fido…Not the sugar skulls!) are all signs of anxiety. Here’s a few tips to make sure your fur baby stays zen while you’re away:

Dog Treat

Earthbound Peace Dog Toy

1. Give your dog a yummy treat or fun toy before you head out the door. We recommend spreading some Dog for Dog Dogsbutter in a hollow toy or dipping a biscuit in it. Unlike regular PB, it’s made without salt, sugar and hydrogenated oils. They’ll never know you left!

2. Leave a TV show or playlist on for some background noise.

3. Take your dog out for some exercise before you leave the house. It will help them get out their extra energy and get your endorphins pumping too!

4. When it’s time to depart, don’t be dramatic. A simple “namaste” and pat on the head is all they need.

We know leaving your dog behind can be difficult. That’s why we love Dog Fridays in the home office! We hope these tips make the transition a little easier.
